Canoe Camping Adventures

With one of our fully guided and all-inclusive wilderness canoe trips, you and your group can spend days camping and fishing along the wild and isolated Allagash River or the historic West Branch of the Penobscot.

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway stretches out in a 93-mile ribbon of rivers, lakes, rapids, and ponds centered around the ancient Allagash River itself. For decades, it has been considered one of the United States’ premier canoe trips across one of the last truly wild spaces in the country.

In 2026, Jim Neville Outdoors will host a select amount of multiday group canoe camping trips starting from Umsaskis Lake and covering miles of breathtaking backwoods glory through the Allagash Wilderness, camping each night on the riverbanks with fully provided camping, canoeing, and fishing gear.

Want to fish during your trip? The Allagash River system is a bucket-list destination for any angler — all you’ll need to do is purchase a Maine fishing license! You can bring your own gear, or it can be provided.

What is most striking in the Maine wilderness is the continuousness of the forest, with fewer open intervals or glades than you had imagined. Except the few burnt lands, the narrow intervals on the rivers, the bare tops of the high mountains, and the lakes and streams, the forest is uninterrupted.

Henry David Thoreau

West Branch of the Penobscot River Trace a portion of the route taken by Henry David Thoreau as he ventured from Greenville to Chesuncook in the 1800’s with his Penobscot Indian Guide Joe Polis. We will begin the journey at Lobster Stream and paddle into the beautiful Lobster Lake for the first night. From Lobster Lake we will retrace our paddle and enter the historic and beautiful West Branch of the Penobscot. The West Branch features amazing scenery, calm clear water and amazing camp sites. This is a must do trip for anyone who loves to adventure off the beaten path. All trips begin at Lobster Stream and end at the Historic Chesuncook Village.
